New train connection to Machu Picchu
May 1st, Inca Rails opened a new train connection from Cusco directly to Machu Picchu (city). The cheapest tickets cost 78 US$ (adult, both ways). The train leaves three times a day and seven days per week.

New Destination: Japan
In the last weeks we added Japan as the next destination for DIY Expeditions customers! Our partner in Hokkaido is a veteran explorer, ski guide and adventurer with his own lodge and tour operating company based north of Sapporo. I can not stress more how proud I’m to have him and his company as our local expert for Hokkaido and Honshu.

Nevado del Ruiz: Eruption ongoing
Volcano Nevado del Ruiz exploded March 31st and issued ash several kilometers high into the sky. The volcano lies 130 km west of Bogotá, Colombia, and is covered by ice. This ice shield provoked on of the biggest volcano disasters of all time in the town of Armero.

Machu Picchu Trail reopened
The popular Inka Trail in Peru leading to the Inka town of Machu Picchu has been reopened after one month of maintenance work. El Nino caused severe weather and caused a few days delay.
Tungurahua: Lavan and ash
Vulcano Tungurahua (Ecuador) continues his violent activities: the main crater exploded again end of February and produced lava and ash clouds.

Zhupanovsky: latest eruption in Kamchatka
The Russian News Agency TASS reports that the Zhupanovsky volcano in Russia’s Far Eastern Kamchatka Peninsula erupted and released ash up to 8 kilometers above the sea level. Travel companies have been asked not to organize tours to the areas close to the Zhupanovsky volcano.
The Zhupanovsky volcano is located in eastern Kamchatka, some 70 kilometers north of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Source
Cotopaxi: partly re-opened
Parts of the Cotopaxi National Park in Ecuador are open to visitors again. Volcano Cotopaxi is still active and an eruption is possible, but the mountain calmed down considerably in the last months. Travellers should contact local authorities to seek actual status information. Warnings can be given only 40 to 60 minutes prior to eruption.
